C-Level Says "Better, Faster and Easier" BI Is Not an Option But a Mandate

Most C-level officials now realize that providing business intelligence (BI) and analytics tools and insights to just a few analysts and managers is a mighty big waste of valuable -- and expensive -- resources and opportunities. They now acknowledge that all executives, managers and key professionals in business units need these tools. Indeed, for many companies, it is very important for all professionals to have access to BI and analytics tools.

That's one of my key take-aways from some new research of large organizations' C-level officials conducted by BusinessWeek Research Services. Almost half of the officials responding to the poll were CEOs, with a large number of chief operating officers and chief financial officers as well. Around 30 percent of the respondents had tech titles, by the way.

Here is a snapshot of the survey results, which will be released in a few months as part of a series of major reports we're doing. We asked the C-levels to give a 1 to 10 rating to the degree of importance of distributing BI and analytics to different strata within their organizations. The higher the number, the greater the importance.

Why the high scores for such a wide swath of BI?

Part of the explanation for the extensive distribution of BI comes from the simple fact that C-level officials are convinced that it improves decision-making. And they want more types of decisions made with BI, not just to help customer service reps at a call center or financial analysts working on a profitability study. The C level says improving production, R&D effectiveness, quality control, procurement and other business tasks are all slated to receive more BI and analytics support in the next few years.

We also have data and insights about C-level thinking and plans for future BI projects as well as their perceived biggest challenges. Furthermore, we have some remarkable and controversial feedback about the ROI of IT in general, as well as about BI.
