Dramatic Expansion of Business Intelligence Underway

C-level executives have embraced business intelligence (BI) as a key tool to achieve their goals of increasing revenue and improving customer service, according to a new research report written by Triangle Publishing Services Co. Inc. for BusinessWeek Research Services.

The report is based on an exclusive survey of more than 350 senior officials at companies with more than 1,000 employees, conducted earlier this year. Survey respondents, and 10 senior officials interviewed in depth, noted the following:

  • More than 50 percent currently use BI and analytics to support each of the following business processes or functions: budgeting, customer service, sales, forecasting, marketing and operations.
  • They are satisfied with the level of value their organizations derive from their operational BI and analytics systems.
  • Almost four out of 10 executives said they will increase their spending for BI and analytics hardware and software by at least 5 percent this year.
  • More than half the respondents said improved decision-making is their top driver for BI and analytics investments this year. Reducing costs is the second most important factor, followed by streamlining operations and delivering information faster.
  • More than 70 percent of the respondents said that BI and analytics tools should be made available to managers, executives and key professionals. Almost half said all professionals should have access, while one out of four respondents said everyone in their organization should have access.

"This is the first survey of senior non-IT officials about their business intelligence and analytics views," noted Triangle Publishing CEO Larry Marion. "We have been reporting on this market for more than a decade, and after many fits and starts, it is clear that the business community is finally enjoying substantial business value from their BI and analytics investments.

"In fact, we are currently working on another report that will conclude that implementing a series of best BI practices produces substantial business value," Marion added. "We have the data from hundreds of senior business managers to back up that statement."

The new report will be available in mid June.
